DIY – Leather Keychain / Valentine Keychain

My previous keychains were all at the end of their lives. It was time for new ones. I made two this afternoon. And you know me… When it comes to DIY projects, I’m all about simplicity. This one took me an hour and I think the result is kind of cute: a heart – just because Valentine’s Day is almost here and a car – for my car key. This is also a project your kids can help with, or even make on their own.

If you want to make this kind of keychain, you’ll need:  a piece of leather, appropriate glue, scissors, acrylic leather paint and paintbrush, leather hole punch, leather cord and key ring or key ring chain.

First, apply a thin layer of the leather glue to the half of the leather piece (inner side), fold over and glue both sides together. Weight the leather down until dry (with some heavy books or something). Then, draw the motive you want and cut it out. (I chose a heart and a car.) Punch a hole for the leather cord. Now you can add/draw something on the leather – or not. However, I recommend painting the edges, because they look better if painted. (I painted the heart edges, too.) Then put the cord through the hole you made, attach a key ring to the leather cord, tie a (slip) knot (as seen in photo above), cut the remaining cord ends and you’re done. As simple as that.

I hope you have a great week so far!
